Art Imitating Lit 6
Have you heard about the latest literary drama going on with Oprah's latest pick for her book club? James Frey, author of A Million Little Pieces may have been stretching the truth a bit in writing his b est-selling memoir chronicling his "steep descent from a dark marathon of drug abuse". Seems The Smoking Gun kinda blew the whistle on this guy, but apparently many reade rs of Frey's memoir had been doubting the veracity of this supposed life of a former frat-boy addict.
I have to wonder what Oprah's thinking through this whole brou ha-ha. Wait. I don't have to wonder! I just need to create another silly comic strip.
Brilliant! Brilliant! If only I'd known who James Frey was before Monday....

Great comic strip! You KNOW Oprah has got to be totally furious. I just hope it doesn't backfire and cause her to shy away from current authors. I can't decide how I sit on this subject. It was a great read and as was the follow up "My Friend Leonard" so in that light it doesn't bother me. BUT, that he passed it all off as true, if in fact it is a lie, bothers me on many levels. Guess we'll just see how it pans out.

I'm so pleased to find another Oprah disliker!

More literature comic strips! And this one I could even understand, the last one was too Canadian for me.

Man, how do you come up with these things? If you keep going, pretty soon you'll have a graphic novel of cartoons about authors. Dare I say, niche market?

Wouldn't that be nice? A gal can dream...

Love it! Maybe she'll scrap the whole book club thing again.
Although, apparently, Oprah called into Larry King last night to express her support to Frey. I expect she's just trying to save face.

Regarding Fry and Franzen, I guess you can say this about the Oprah book club:
Once shy, twice bitten.
Heh.

Absolutely brilliant cartoon.
But personally I don't understand the fuss. Embellishing the truth is called 'journalistic licence' and if people think he's the first person to do it, boy, do I have news for them!

Patricia, I love your strip!
[Maybe I should re-phrase that...]
You've got some great panel going on there.
[I need therapy!]
Thank you for making me laugh today. There, that is what I mean to say.

Don't worry, Cipriano. You wouldn't be the first person to call me 'Patricia The Stripper'.

Who was it that said there is no such thing as bad publicity? Apparently this book is now the top seller on Amazon, B&N, and at Borders. Go figure. Leak a little something like the fact that you might not exactly have been telling the whole truth in your memoirs and you get a whole new waves of sales. Imagine that. What a coincidence.

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!

Oprah needs to pack it in and move to California to be with the "people" she really loves - celebrities.
