The House That Bleak Built
So who saw the first episode of Masterpiece Theatre's production of Ble ak House? I was riveted, I tell you, utterly riveted. The acting, the atmosphere, the cinemaphotography ... it's all just bloody perfect. And Gillian Anderson as Lady Deadlock? She's mesmerizing. And God, I am still in love with Charles Dance after all these years, even though he is playing the despicable Tulkinghorn. I'm even pleased with how Esther is being portrayed. Physically, I think the actress suits the part very well, and what I really appreciate is the fact that in this series I feel that Esther has been blessed with much more depth than Charles Dickens ever gave her. And Mr. Guppy! He's perfect! So obsequious! So deliciously slimey! Hats off to Masterpiece Theatre for creating such an amazing interpretation of Dickens' Bleak House.
Oh, and speaking of houses, we got possession of ours today! Plenty of work still to be done, and then we move in this Friday. I'm hoping to do one more post if I can, and then more than likely I won't be back online until Saturday night or Sunday morning.
I cannot believe we own a house! Hopefully ours will be anything but bleak!
CONGRATULATIONS! Owning a house is a ton of work, but there's nothing like puttering around a place that is truly your own. With your talents I'm sure it will be a warm, wonderful home. Enjoy and don't work too hard!

Of course, I meant *congratulations*. Urgh!

Congratulations, darling. Hope all goes smoothly. Would you write something about the elections? Or is politics out of place in this space? I truly wonder, thinking about bubbles and all...trying to get a better feel of Canadian politics, and people's attitude towards it (coming back from Israel where everything is political, what you eat and what you drink and where you live and how you breath).

YES! I watched Bleak House too! I am hooked! I just loved Gillian Anderson. I kept thinking, wow...that can't be Sculley. I haven't read the book, which I assume you have...so I am waiting impatiently for the next episode to continue the story.
Have fun moving!!! I moved in 10 years ago and I'm still not unpacked. I gave up long ago....

Congraulations on the house!
Glad you found time to see Bleak House — me, too, I was riveted. Did you finish reading it? How do they compare? For example, I think it's quite obvious how some of the plot will develop (I won't mention here for fear of spoiling) and I wonder how much of that is the effect of interpretation and editing versus the clues actually present in the text? I so have to read it now...

Take lots of photos before, just in case if you remodel, you'll know what you started with.

I missed it. Maybe I'll catch up next week.
Anyway, congrats on your house!!

I just clicked to your site after reading your recent comment on Keri Smith's blog, and very much in agreement with it, I wanted to see what else you had to say, and am so glad to have visited your site tonight for the first time. I just started my own blog two weeks ago and its a whole new world. I'm also a new homeowner like yourself. Perhaps we can follow one another's adventures into this wacky and wonderful leap! Actually we take ownership February 15. It all feels so big. Signing all these papers makes me feel like I'm in 6th grade again and getting away with something I'm not supposed to be doing. Either way as soon as I'm in yellow paint is hitting the walls! Have a wonderful time!!!! I look forward to returning!

I'm loving Bleak House too. Mr. Guppy is absolutely perfect. Wouldn't it be great if the BBC and Andrew Davies adapted Little Dorrit next?

I also liked Andrew Davies's Bleak House. Only the chase at the end of the book is better performed in the 1985 adaptation. Everyone did a good job and Alun Amstrong as Bucket is certainly a forerunner of Sherlock Holmes as far as his methods are concerned.
I, for one, would also like to watch Dorrit adapted for TV by Davies.
