I have a weakness for losers. Invalids, foreigners, the fat boy of the class, the ones nobody ever wants to dance with. My heart beats for them. Maybe because I've always known that in some way I will forever be one of them.

hi Patricia,
thanks for reminding me about this book, which I loved! I wasn't as sure about the movie, although Julia Ormond is truly gorgeous.

Sheila, I am really enjoying the book. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I can see how it would be very hard to translate the story into film, since so much of the story is the internal world of Smilla.

I haven't seen the movie either, but I remember enjoying the book. It's been a while since I read it, though.

You'd be surprised just how amazing "losers" can be if someone just gives them a chance. There's a lot of amazing talent being wasted in this world.

I hear ya, DJ. I wasted a lot of my youth thinking I was a useless loser, simply because I believed the cruel words of some not-so-nice folk. And I still struggle with that battle, truth be told.
