Heard on the news this morning, that Pete Seeger, American folk singer, song writer and activist turned 90 yesterday! I've always been drawn to folk music, probably because my mom used to sing folk songs and sea shanties on her guitar at parties and family events many years ago. I know she liked to sing some Pete Seeger songs, like Where Have all the Flowers Gone and If I Had a Hammer. And I was very fortunate to see Pete Seeger perform live with another folk singer love of mine, Arlo Guthrie, sometime in the eary 1980's at Ontario Place. It was an amazing evening, even though the guy I was with was such I jerk. But I digress.
So Happy Birthday, Pete! Here's to many more wonderful years on this mixed-up planet. You have definitely made this crazy world a better place with your songs, your optimism, and your humour.
I leave you with one of my favourite Pete Seeger performances, singing Little Boxes, which was written by Malvina Reynolds. It's my hat-tip to a place I couldn't wait to get the hell out of, the dark and dreaded suburbs.
